For those of you who know my work, you probably know that Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer has in many ways been my North Star. She is a woman who was jailed and beaten simply to earn the right to vote – and she was fighting not only for herself and the disenfranchised citizens of Mississippi at the time, but for those of us in the future. On earlier this month, she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It a recognition long overdue and well-deserved.

Hamer’s work transformed the political landscape for America. This prestigious honor underscores her pivotal role in the fight for freedom and equality. Hamer’s bravery and activism continue to inspire new generations advocating for human rights. The Presidential Medal of Freedom celebrates her profound impact, ensuring her story remains a beacon of hope.
