However, Fannie Lou Hamer refused to accept life on anyone’s terms but her own.
60 years ago, Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer, was jailed and beaten, along with some over her colleagues, for trying to register to vote. Today, a marker is dedicated to their heroism and legacy of fighting for equality. I had the chance to travel to Winona for the dedication, and witnessed the significance of that marker. Afterwards, I shared my film, spoke to residents in Winona, said thank you to people like Dr. Leslie McLemore, who worked as an activist alongside Mrs. Hamer, and shared why I am committed to the work I do.
